The Challenge in Dealing with Obesity in a Social and Cultural Context
Te Aniwa Tutara, Waitemata District Health Board, Auckland, New Zealand

Understanding how obesity affects Maori people is a purely simle scientific paradigm, because we simply need to understand how the body works, and the difference between what energy input the body requires and what the body actually needs to function well.  If one significantly exceeds the other, over years, then one has arrived at the destination town of obesity.  But how do we as professionals inspire our "victims" of the obesity epidemic to take on our scientifically designed solutions, when obesity is a non-issue for them?  What are the pathways to making a difference? and will we ever get on the right track?  We will, but only if we work with Maori within their social and cultural context - this is Mission Impossible for most health professionals.
